Rifugio Nacamuli to Rifugio Aosta with Mont Brule

Date: Sunday, August 2

We set out from Rifugio Nacamuli and followed the route towards Col Collon and Mont Brulé. From the hut, the ascent of Mont Brulé was largely free of snow. A short section of ice lay between the fore-summit(pointe Marcel kurz) and the ascent to the main summit, involving approximately 150 metres of ice.

After descending from the summit, we crossed Col Collon and continued down towards the Arolla Glacier. The descent from Col Collon involved little ice but a considerable amount of loose, dirty terrain. The route was marked by Stones (stone dwarves), although it ran farther to the south than the normal way shown on the map. It was not particularly pleasant to walk, but it was straightforward and presented no major difficulties.

We then ascended the Arolla Glacier towards the foot of Col du Mont Brulé. The glacier was pleasant to travel on, and we followed its northern half, below Refuge des Bouquetins. The glacier approach itself was uncomplicated.

We entered Col du Mont Brulé on the far left when viewed from below, aiming for what appeared to be more solid rock. This proved to be a poor choice: for roughly 80 vertical metres, the terrain consisted of extremely loose scree and rubble, triggering numerous rockfalls and slides. Above this section, the rock became considerably more solid, with climbing up to UIAA grade II. The route involved two sections of approximately 35 metres each before reaching the ridge. From there, we continued along the ridge and then traversed the edge of the scree slope to reach the exit of Col du Mont Brulé. Although this line is possible, we would not recommend it because of the exceptionally loose rock and the resulting objective hazard.

The descent from Col du Mont Brulé to the Haut Glacier de Tsa de Tsan began with a steep ice fac, remnants of glacier ice. At the transition onto the glacier, the route continued over a large amount of loose rubble.

The glacier itself was mostly bare ice and heavily crevassed. Apart from this, the traverse towards Col de la Division was straightforward. The descent from Col de la Division was also uncomplicated. The upper section is secured with chains, and route-finding down to Rifugio Aosta was easy.

Overall, the tour offered varied terrain, from mostly snow-free alpine rock and glacier travel and loose scree. The ascent via the left-hand entry to Col du Mont Brulé should be treated with caution and is not recommended due to the significant rockfall and scree hazard.
