Piz Palü (3899m): Diavolezza - Hauptgipfel - Cavaglia
Piz Palü normal route from Diavolezza
I took the first cable car at 8am. From Diavolezza I descended onto the Pers glacier, first on skis as far as possible on hard snow and then on foot on very unstable terrain. The climb to the ski depot is excellently marked; I didn't use crampons. Every now and then you can see cracks and small holes, but they're not causing any problems at the moment. From the ski depot I changed gear and, with ice axe and crampons, still on excellent track, I overcame the steep final slope and then the sharp ridge that I followed up to the central Piz Palù, 3906 metres, with breathtaking views. Returning to the ski depot, the descent in the upper section is very challenging, with very fun spring-like passages in the central section and finally more demanding but still very skiable. I returned to Diavolezza completely with my skis on my shoulder, then ski slope until a few metres from the car. The weather today was spectacular: clear skies, no wind, and pleasant temperatures even at the top. A fantastic trip in a magnificent setting together with lots of other people. Greetings and thanks to Fabrizio and company, whom I met at the ski depot, for sharing a part of this day with me.
