ski mountaineering Monte Rosa
We left Zermatt on the 21st of april, and reached Breithorn via the Klein Matterhorn seilbahn in 1 hour. Perfect weather: sunny and cold. The snow was hard, good track up to summit.
Overnight in a tent, in Zwillingsjoch. Next day: Castor. With skis till halfway. Last 100 meters of westface and the summitridge skis on backpack. Good track in hard snow. Descent to Felikhorn in soft/powder snow. Strong wind, so we decided not to go to Lykamm. Alternative: on skis via Il Naso (traverse underneath Lykamm southside) to bivouac Giordani. Ascent: good track, sometimes ice on steep slope. (harscheisen and pickel)
Descent to Lisjoch: hard ice! Bivouac was a realy nice little hut, under statue.
Yesterday descent via Grenzgletsjer and Gornergletsjer. It is possible to ski to Zermatt. Snow in upperpart is soft, with hard crust. Route seems realy safe. No problems with crevasses. Avalanche risk 2. Last part of the Gornergletsjer is icy. Overall: Nice tour!
